SQL Website > Towns in Malta > Ta' Xbiex

Ta' Xbiex Ta' Xbiex derives its name from 'Ta' which means 'of' and 'Xbiex' from 'Tax-Xbiek' meaning 'of the nets', since this small town started off as a fishing village.

Situated a 5 minutes' drive from Sliema and bordering with charming Msida, Ta' Xbiex is set amidst some of the most beautiful coastline around this peninsula. Around two miles long, ix-Xatt ta' Xbiex (Ta' Xbiex Waterfront) surrounds a hill where handsome detached villas and exclusively modern apartment buildings look over the Yacht Marina and the enchanting Marsamxett Harbour.

Some of the Villas are home to a number of foreign embassies, including the Embassies of Egypt, Italy, France and the British High Commission. The town also hosts a good amount of state of the art offices for insurance companies, law firms and some IT and ship chandler service industries. It also services part of the Yacht Marina that stretches all the way to Msida creek making it the largest on the Islands.

Among the original villas, one finds Villa Oxania, which belonged to Sir Temi Zammit (1864-1935) noted physician and a leading archaeologist. Villa Cloe was home to Sir Arturo Mercieca (1878-1969), a long-time president of the Maltese Courts and a renowned political leader. Both patriots died while they held residence at this beautiful locality.

The Ta' Xbiex promenade, that stretches all the to St. Julians through Sliema way is a lovely place for a long relaxing walk, with stops on the way for drinks, snacks, restaurants and playgrounds for families to enjoy.
