Balzan Balzan (or Hal-Balzan) is a typical Maltese Village located towards the centre of the Island. It is one of the so called three villages, together with Attard and Lija.

The earliest records of dwellings in Balzan date back to 1419-20. The village originally consisted of a group of small dwellings and farms, but eventually grew, becoming a parish in the 17th century. Balzan's population increased drastically during the war. People from Cospiqua and Vittoriosa area seeked refuge from the constant bombardments in the quiet village of Balzan and they liked it so much that many of them stayed and never returned!

It was named after Maximillian Balzan, a Spanish merchant who married a Maltese girl and settled in Malta in 1567. A very large area of land was donated to him for services rendered by Jean Claude de la Vallette, Grandmaster to the Order the Knights of St John. On the land Maximillian Balzan planted many orange trees imported from Spain. The locality became well-known for its typical beautiful gardens and orchards laden with citrus fruits, and it became known as Ta' Balzan.

The Motto of Balzan - 'Hortibus undique sept'a -means surrounded by gardens. Balzan is now an Urban Conservation Area, a guarantee that most of its unique character will remain for years to come.

Over the years its population had increased due to new Apartment developments that have replaced some of the villas and their gardens. Along with Attard and Lija it is a very sought after location. In spite of the decreasing number of such gardens, Balzan still boasts an abundance of traditional Town Houses and Villas with back gardens full of lemon, orange and tangerine trees.
